Housewarming

The new apartment awaits its guests. Brand new folding chairs line the walls of the dining room, and the living room is as clean as possible.

Almost everything is ready. Let the housewarming begin!

Rapunzel walks around the room, making sure that nothing needs refilling, and that the guests are happy. She wants Alex to be able to relax and brag about his new place, without having to worry about that sort of thing.

"And you must be Rapunzel," the man in the gray suit greets her. "I'm Michael Donighal. Knox has mentioned you to me, though I don't know if he's mentioned me to you in turn."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Micheal Donigal. He may have mentioned you, and I just don't remember. Meeting so many new people, and hearing about dozens more, after decades of never making any new friends...it's a bit much, sometimes."

Not that she minds one bit.

"I can relate, believe me. I spent a few decades in isolation with some of my closest friends, though in my case, it was voluntary."

She nods. It's not so voluntary on my part when I'm back home, but there's really no other place for me to go. When I found Milliways, it was a whole new experience where I didn't have to hide who I am--I've been bound, or at least unable to go back to Fabletown, since the first time I walked through the door, and I can't say I mind.

"Again, I know the feeling. I've generally been able to come and go as I please, but most of the other places I've been, I couldn't be myself, as it were.

"And I wondered if you might be the Rapunzel from Fabletown. I was friends with Snow White, and through her Bigby and the twins, before they left. She was among the first friends I made here, and I still catch myself missing her sometimes." He sighs and shrugs. "But friends in Milliways are like buses at times; there'll be another one along eventually."

"I'd heard they were at Milliways. I'm sorry I missed them. I don't get to see her much, now that they've moved to Wolf Valley. I've run into a couple of others, too."

Though now isn't the time to talk about Goldilocks.

"Where are you from, originally?"

"An Earth with superheroes, of a sort. I used to be one of those heroes; then I was an anti-hero or a villain, depending on whom you asked; now I'm trying to be a hero again."

"This world has superheroes in it, but mine doesn't...not really. It never ceases to amaze me how many of you find your way to Milliways."

"Well, you know. Hopping dimensions is just a thing we do, he said modestly."

"And is that your super power? Dimensional travel?"

"One of them. My primary powers are to do with manipulating hydrogen plasma, and with tweaking the quantum medium that's one of the main sources of superhuman powers in my home world. But I can do more or less anything I put my mind to, really."

"I'm just going to pretend I understood that, and go with the last thing you said...you can do nearly anything."

She smiles in good humor.

"That's very impressive."

It didn't happen until they were somewhere together--either sitting or even standing near each other--because thats just how these things work sometimes.

But once they've become slightly ensconced with each other, relaxed against the gentle chattering hum of their room, there comes a bouncy voice from right behind them. "I'm not too late, am I?"

And out of nowhere, without any door or light, as was not too unnatural for her, Allie, cute as a button and tiny as always, had appeared for them from wherever she'd needed go, to do those things she had so needed to do.

Rapunzel blinks at the light, and places a hand on Alex's arm, wondering what's going on, but not really afraid--this is a Milliways crowd, after all.

When Allie appears in front of them, her smile is wide as a lump comes to her throat.

"Allie! Alex, it's Allie! She made it!"

"I had to try, since I told him I'd come originally," She says with a grin, and she goes to hug them both.

Alex smiles, surprised by the rather interesting entrance, but glad she's here. And quite taken with how utterly happy Raps is to see Allie. Somehow, it seems right.

"Welcome to my place, and my world."

"Thank you." Allie said, with a small look around the room and people, since all she could see so far was the inside of an apartment.

Looking back at him, with a very small smile, she added. "Your gift is in the kitchen."

She hugs Allie again, and beams at Alex.

"But you really didn't have to get me a gift. Not that i don't appreciate the sentiment." He's loaded, and she's a kid. Something seems unfair.

Allie grinned up at him, still half curled into Rapunzel. "It's a house warming. You're supposed to bring things."

This is said in a tone which just screams DUH, but it's done with a giggle in her voice. She might not be amazing at being a little human girl all the time. But there are moments she does remember her mother raised her right.

"Your being here is gift enough, but it's nice of you."

She turns her smiling eyes to Alex.

"Shall we go and see what it is?"

"Yup." He's made his protest, and now will happily accept anything that Allie got. Maybe it's one of the homemade things that kids do sometimes and that's nicer than something store-bought.

Well, it's a cross gift. Something neither little girl and yet entirely Allie. In the center of the kitchen is a magazine rack, the kind he's wanted for his house though perhaps though about not being able to get.

And resting, most noticeably, in the center of it is a baseball hat.

Still curled in against Rapunzel, she says, with a grin, "I have a matching one."

Hat of course. Not magazine rack.

"Ah, yes! Now you're ready to begin coaching! Very nicely chosen, Allie."
