Housewarming

The new apartment awaits its guests. Brand new folding chairs line the walls of the dining room, and the living room is as clean as possible.

Almost everything is ready. Let the housewarming begin!

Rapunzel nods, and strokes Allie's hair with one hand.

"Rachel's unflinching sense of responsibility seems to have struck a chord in our young heroine, here."

She tries not to be unhappy about it, but it's hard.

Alex isn't entirely unhappy about such things. He likes heroes. Even if Allie is just a bit young.

"Really? What did Rachel say to you?"

She resisted the urge to frown, though it may have shown in her expression regardless. She didn't think she was a hero --weren't heroes brave and sure? Didn't they go because they wanted to and knew they had to? Not because they felt guilt? Didn't they go knowing it was right and not heavy in their hearts?-- but really considering contradicting Rapunzel, seemed too much like contradicting her mom.

"About treasuring other people; about the consequences for the multitudes when singular people did nothing."

...and about coming home. She'd said things about home. Which would never leave Allie's mind.

"She liked hats, too." This is said quietly, and sort of sheepishly, because it's easier than the other thing. "And that she might help referee if the kids get the game together."

Rapunzel doesn't have any doubt that Allie is a hero. She has seen her share of heroes in her life, so she would know.

"Once we know who is playing, we can get matching shirts, too."

"I'm sure Rachel never heard this saying, but someone once said, 'all that's needed for the bad guys to win is for the good guys to do nothing.' Not a bad way to live." Even if somewhere out there, Edmund Burke is rolling is grave over this awful misquotation.

"In baseball, it's called an umpire. And she would be great at it, once I explained the rules." A pause. "Which take a while."

Allie doesn't remark about the incorrectness, simply looked up thoughtfully.

"Umpire," she repeats. "I hope it won't be too hard to get a hang of. I'm actually looking forward to it."

She really was, too. It kind of linked her old family and her new one, through something she had never done or had anything, or anyone, touch before.

"I am, too! I don't expect to be very good at it, but I bet it'll be fun!"

She grins at Alex, imagining him riding herd over a bunch of kids with baseball bats.

"You're gonna try, too?" Alex smiles at Raps, a fleeting vision of her in a well-tailor Mets shirt and shorts rushing through his mind. Before he recalls that Allie can read such things, and he'd rather not share that with her. "So it will be you and me and the kids versus the adults, or do you think we just keep it to the kids to start?"

"I need to put the signs up when I come back, so I can find out if all the kids want to come play," she said it thoughtfully, and then looked up. "Unless one of you wants to put them up before I return."

She gives Alex a smirk, letting him know that he knows exactly what he's thinking.

"We could do that, but then we don't know when you'll be back...we wouldn't want to start without you..."

"Tell you what, Allie...I'll start getting the equipment ready and talking to any other kids I see. And when you get back, we'll do a formal note? OK?

"Oh, and are you a lefty or a righty." Because she'll need a glove.

"Right handed," Allie said, holding up her hand and wiggling her fingers. She's grinning broadly again, too.

"And I think that sound terrific."

Rapunzel just grins at both of them, happy to have two of her favorite people together, and getting along.

"Let's get Allie some cookies, or something to eat, and she can get to meet everyone else at the party."

[identity profile] gotham-knocking.livejournal.com 2007-07-05 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. You should meet Kita, or Steph. They aren't much older than you." Well, not really, but what does it mean when the tweens and teens all seem young?

"Let's get some cookies." Alex offers Rapunzel his arm.

"I would like that," Allie says, grinning.

Cookies were nice. As were people. Especially ones he found important enough to have here.

And then, because she was young and sometimes there things were that simple;

"What kind of cookies are there?"
