Housewarming

The new apartment awaits its guests. Brand new folding chairs line the walls of the dining room, and the living room is as clean as possible.

Almost everything is ready. Let the housewarming begin!

"You miss it? It can't be easy to give up an exciting life, but Milliways is far from boring."

"Yeah, but ... well, Gotham, man," Steph explains, gesturing out the window and grinning. "At least Joker doesn't seem to come to Milliways any more. Man, that was weird."

"Good Lord! He was at Milliways? Next you'll be telling me Lex Luthor was there, too!"

Steph's eyes go big and wide.

"He was?!"

"No! No, no, no....I meant with the joker being there, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Lex Luthor there, too. If he showed up, I'm sure Alex would still be talking about it."

Steph's mock-horror dissolves into giggles. "I was teasing, I know. But you know, he totally would, wouldn't he? In my world, he was President for a while."

"I'm going to assume that he didn't cause a blizzard in the beginning of summer in your world with a weather machine."

She shakes her head with a wry smile.

"They say that anyone can become president. I really believe that - and not in a good way."

Steph nods, grinning ruefully. "At least they all figured it out in the end. I think he's back to being Public Enemy Number One now. I ... Actually, I'm not a hundred percent sure, but I hope so."

"Isn't there anyone one else from your Gotham in the bar? Alex mentioned a girl names Chloe who was from a different Metropolis than the one in this world...maybe she;s from yours?"

"Nope, I met her. I think she's from a different one again. There's a few of my people there, though." Steph wrinkles her nose. "It's sort of awkward actually, my boyfriend from before I was dead turned up a few weeks ago..."

"Oh, dear...did he know that you were dead? You don't look dead."'

She's glad she hasn't run into any alternate Fables, yet.

Steph nods. "Well, he didn't get it right away, but see, when Babs came the first time it was at the lake party and I was wearing a bikini? So:" She holds out one arm and peels her sleeve up a bit; most of her skin is covered in old scars, still vicious despite being faded. It's not so visible on her face, but that might be more the light. Steph lets her sleeve fall back, with an exaggerated sigh of disapproval, and gives Rapunzel a grin to ward off any need for sympathy. "So she told him right away. Babs is O--"

Steph snaps her mouth shut, thinking. Because she's in Gotham.

"--ooold friend of both of ours."

"Ouch. You've been through the ringer, haven't you?"

No pity in her voice, but she is sympathetic, just the same.

"I don't think I've met this Babs. Is she bound?"

"Nope, she comes and goes. Cute redhead in a wheelchair, you can't miss her." Steph grins. "She's awesome."

"I'll have to make it a point to meet her. Sometimes I think that Alex knows everyone in the bar. How did you figure out that you weren't from the same Gotham?"

"Different mayors, I think," Steph says, thinking back. "And different events. And there's like a zillion different Earths, honestly I'm just surprised more of them don't have Gothams. It would've probably been weirder if we were from the same Gotham."

"I suppose so. I came to Milliways from New York City, so we don't have a Gotham or a Metropolis. Alex thinks that Metropolis and New York are pretty much the same place, though."

"Really? See, that's way weird," Steph says, propping her chin on her hand to think. "My world has New York and Metropolis, and Gotham. I mean, they're totally different. It's not like anyo--

"--is your hair longer now than it was ten minutes ago?"

She chuckles at the abrupt change in subject.

"Yep. It grows about an inch every fifteen minutes or so. I actually shaved my head just before jumping in the shower today."

Steph is so impressed, all wide-eyed grinning. "Wow! Dude. I mean, I totally always wondered how the stories about you made any sense. How long can it get, if you don't cut it?"

"About ninety feet...it takes a bit over a week to do that, though."

She is used to wide-eyed stares when they hear it.

"When I'm at home, I have to get it cut three times a day, so the Mundy's don't realize who I am."

Steph is seriously so impressed!

"Wow. Seriously, wow, that's totally awesome! Mundys ... like ... normal people? Mundanes?"

"That's right. We don't want them to know about us, and our somewhat magical nature, so there are strict laws in place about interacting with them. A lot more strict for me, since it's so noticeable."

She scans the room, and her eyes land on Alex affectionately for a moment.

"Milliways has been like a dream come true, after centuries of knowing the same people, and not being able to make friends with anyone new."

"Wow," Steph says, sympathetic. "Yeah, I can imagine. Milliways is pretty special."

She grins.

"Like the people you meet there are."

She smiles back.

"Exactly."

Remembering her role as semi-hostess, she gestures toward the kitchen.

"Can I get you something to drink? There's all kinds of food, too."
